A common question from anyone who just found their birth certificate: my time is written as "1:47 PM" — do I need it to the minute, or is "afternoon" enough for BaZi? The answer is somewhere between the two, and it depends on which pillar the time is used to compute. Here's a concrete guide to how precise your birth time really needs to be, when the extra decimal matters, and where BaZi is more forgiving than it looks.
Traditional BaZi divides the day into 12 two-hour blocks, each corresponding to one Earthly Branch. For the Hour pillar, all you need is to know which of these 12 blocks contains your birth. Being at :05 vs :55 inside the correct block doesn't change anything.
So the practical requirement is: know your birth hour to within ~30 minutes to be safe. To-the-minute precision doesn't matter for BaZi unless you were born very near a block boundary — in which case, ±5 minutes is the meaningful window.

These are the fixed boundaries. If your birth is anywhere inside a block, the Hour branch is the same:

A birth at 08:14 is Chen (Dragon). A birth at 08:59 is still Chen. A birth at 09:01 is Mao (Rabbit). The block boundary is the only precision that matters — everything inside a block is equivalent.
The Rat hour (Zi 子, 23:00–01:00) straddles midnight. Traditional BaZi has two conventions for handling this:
Practical implication: if your birth is between 23:00 and 24:00, you may need to check which convention your calculator uses. Different conventions produce different Day Masters. Our calculator uses the early-Zi convention (day rolls at 23:00), which matches modern academic BaZi.
If your birth is within about 5 minutes of a block boundary — say 07:56 or 09:03 — you're in a fuzzy zone. Two reasons:
For near-boundary births, get both possible Hour pillars and read which one fits your lived experience better. This is an area where a practitioner adds real value.
Traditional BaZi uses local solar time, not standard clock time. Standard time is pegged to a time zone meridian; solar time depends on your actual longitude.

DST is a clock convention, not a solar one. If your birth was during DST, your clock time is one hour ahead of standard time. A well-built calculator handles this in two steps:
Do not manually adjust for DST before entering your time — a good calculator handles it via time zone rules. Manual double-adjustment is a common source of off-by-one-hour errors.
If you're using a calculator that doesn't handle DST (asks only for a "time offset" or has no city dropdown), and your birth was during DST, you'll need to subtract one hour from your clock time before entering.
Even though the branch level only cares about 2-hour blocks, some practitioners still ask for minutes. Reasons:
For pure BaZi analysis, minute-level precision is only meaningful within ~5 minutes of a boundary. Elsewhere, "I know my birth was around 2:30 PM" is fully sufficient.

Not for the Hour pillar itself — BaZi runs on 2-hour blocks, so any time within the correct block gives the same result. Minute precision only matters within ~5 minutes of a block boundary (like 08:55 vs 09:05, which straddles Chen and Mao).
Two conventions exist. Modern academic BaZi uses "early Zi" — a birth at 23:15 is treated as the next day's Day pillar with the Zi hour branch.
