Everyone wants their BaZi chart to promise money. But the wealth question in BaZi is more interesting — and more useful — than "do I have wealth stars." The real question is whether your chart can hold the wealth it attracts, and when that wealth actually shows up. Here's how to read money luck in a BaZi chart properly, without the fortune-cookie version.
Your Wealth star (财星) is the element your Day Master controls in the five-element cycle. The logic: wealth is something you command, so it's the element you dominate.
| Your Day Master | Your Wealth element |
|---|---|
| Wood (甲乙) | Earth |
| Fire (丙丁) | Metal |
| Earth (戊己) | Water |
| Metal (庚辛) | Wood |
| Water (壬癸) | Fire |
Wealth here means more than cash — it's assets, resources, and the material world you can bring under your control. Traditionally, for men, the Wealth star also signifies the spouse.
The Wealth element comes in two flavors depending on polarity — and they describe two very different money temperaments:
Direct Wealth (正财) — the Wealth element of opposite polarity to your Day Master. Steady, earned, reliable money: a salary, careful saving, predictable income, assets you build slowly. The "hard-working accumulator" signature.
Indirect Wealth (偏财) — the Wealth element of the same polarity. Flexible, opportunistic money: business, investment, windfalls, commissions, side income. The "deal-maker / risk-taker" signature. In a man's chart it can also point to romance outside marriage.
Most people lean toward one. Neither is richer — they reward different strategies. A Direct Wealth person forcing themselves into speculation, or an Indirect Wealth person stuck in a rigid salary, both underperform their chart.
This is the single most important idea in reading BaZi wealth, and it's the opposite of what beginners assume. Having wealth stars is not the same as being wealthy. What matters is whether your Day Master is strong enough to control the wealth.
This is why two people with prominent wealth stars can live completely different financial lives. Strength decides whether wealth is a resource or a weight.
You don't need a big wealth star to make money. In the five-element cycle, your Output stars (食伤) — creativity, skill, expression — produce the Wealth element. This is the classic "Output generates Wealth" (食伤生财) structure: you earn through talent, craft, or building something, and that skill converts into money. Many self-made people have modest wealth stars but strong Output feeding them. If your chart is light on wealth but heavy on Output, your money route is make something valuable, not chase money directly.
A natal chart with no Wealth element is common and does not mean poverty. Wealth still arrives two ways:
Timing is half of BaZi wealth. Money luck peaks when two things line up: a Luck Pillar or year brings the Wealth element, and your Day Master is strong enough to use it. A wealth-element decade for a strong Day Master is a textbook money period. The exact same decade for a weak Day Master can be the most financially stressful stretch of a life — same "wealth luck," opposite result.
This is why the practical move is never just "read the natal chart." It's to lay out your Luck Pillars and see which decades bring wealth and whether your chart is equipped to carry it. That's the difference between "there's money in your chart" and "here's the decade it shows up."

Open the BaZi Calculator →The Wealth star (财星) is the element your Day Master controls: Wood controls Earth, Fire controls Metal, Earth controls Water, Metal controls Wood, Water controls Fire. It represents money, assets and resources you can command — and traditionally, for men, the spouse. It comes as Direct Wealth (steady income) or Indirect Wealth (windfalls, business).
Direct Wealth (正财) is opposite polarity to your Day Master — steady, earned money like salary and careful saving. Indirect Wealth (偏财) is the same polarity — flexible, opportunistic money like business, investment and windfalls. Most people lean one way, and each rewards a different money strategy.
Not by itself. What matters is whether your Day Master is strong enough to hold the wealth. A strong Day Master commands money; a weak Day Master buried in wealth (财多身弱) usually means money stress and opportunities that drain rather than build. In that case the chart needs strengthening before it can use the wealth.
It doesn't mean poverty. Wealth still arrives when your Luck Pillars or annual years bring the Wealth element, and through strong Output stars (skill and creativity) that generate wealth — 食伤生财. Many people earn through talent rather than a prominent wealth star.
When a Luck Pillar or year brings the Wealth element and your Day Master is strong enough to use it. A wealth decade for a strong Day Master is a classic money period; the same decade for a weak Day Master can be financially stressful. Calculate your Luck Pillars to see which decades favor wealth.
