Indirect Resource (偏印) — also called the Owl God (枭神) — is the element that generates your Day Master with matching polarity. If Water generates Wood, and your Day Master is Yin Wood (乙), then Yin Water (癸) is your Direct Resource, and Yang Water (壬) is your Indirect Resource. Same nurturing element, different temperature. Direct Resource warms. Indirect Resource protects, but coldly.
Classical texts associate Indirect Resource with the stepmother, the eccentric aunt, the mentor who leaves before you graduate. It also governs unusual expertise — self-taught skills, esoteric knowledge, metaphysics, alternative medicine, deep specialization in obscure fields. The person with strong Indirect Resource often knows exactly one weird thing better than almost anyone else alive.
Both Resource stars generate the Day Master. Direct Resource does it with opposite polarity — a smooth, balanced flow. Indirect Resource does it with same polarity — the flow works, but the giver and receiver do not entirely trust each other. Nurture happens; warmth does not.
Ancient practitioners nicknamed it the Owl God (枭神), because owls in Chinese folklore were considered inauspicious birds — beneficial in effect but ominous in appearance. Indirect Resource is protection that arrives from an uncomfortable source: the stepparent, the reluctant mentor, the book by a heretic that turns out to be right.
Year pillar Indirect Resource can indicate an unusual family origin — adopted, raised by grandparents or extended family, mother deceased or absent early, stepmother present. In modern readings, it also shows up as households where the child was intellectually formed by media, libraries, or a distant relative more than by the immediate parents.

Day branch Indirect Resource creates a distant or unconventional spouse dynamic. The partner may be older, foreign, of a different faith or culture, or emotionally reserved. Marriages work but stay a little cool — companions rather than confidants.
For women, day-branch Indirect Resource sometimes indicates a husband met through study or through mother's networks, or a marriage delayed by extended education. For men, the wife may be quiet, artistic, or independently absorbed.
Hour pillar Indirect Resource points to late-life immersion in unusual study — the retiree who takes up ancient Greek, becomes a Reiki master, or writes a doctoral thesis at 68. Children may be intellectually unusual — gifted, eccentric, or interested in fields the parent doesn't understand.
Health-wise, Indirect Resource in the hour can indicate late-life digestive or absorption issues (Owl God is classically linked with the spleen/stomach system when it eats Eating God, its opposite in the output category).
