Both things are true, and the gap between them is the whole story of doing BaZi with AI properly. Here's what AI is actually good at here, where it silently fails, and the architecture that gets you a real reading instead of a fluent guess.
Your BaZi chart starts with a piece of pure calendar arithmetic. Your birth date and time have to be converted into four pairs of Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches — the Year, Month, Day, and Hour pillars — using the Chinese solar calendar (the 24 solar terms, not the lunar new year most people assume), your exact longitude for true solar time, and a 60-day sexagenary cycle that has been counting, unbroken, for over two thousand years.
This is deterministic. There is exactly one correct answer for any birth moment. And it's precisely the kind of multi-step, lookup-heavy arithmetic that language models are worst at. Ask a general chatbot for "my BaZi chart, born 3 March 1990, 14:20" and it will produce four confident pillars that are frequently wrong — most often the Day Pillar, which depends on continuous day-counting the model cannot actually perform. It doesn't know it's wrong. It has no calendar; it has a plausible-sounding pattern of characters.
Everything downstream inherits that error. A brilliant interpretation of the wrong Day Master is worthless — it's a beautiful reading of somebody else's life.
Once the chart is correct, the work changes character. Interpretation is about holding many interacting factors at once — Day Master strength, the Five Elements balance, the Ten Gods, clashes and combinations, the current Luck Pillar — and expressing what they mean in language a person can use. That's synthesis and explanation, and it's exactly what a good language model does well.
A traditional practitioner does this from memory and experience. A well-built AI does it from the same classical rules, applied consistently, explained in plain English, and patient enough to answer the fifth follow-up question at 1am. Neither is mystical. Both are pattern-reading on a correctly-built chart.
